Matthew Brown.


Head Boys Basketball Coach

Biography:

Coach Brown is entering in his 17th year of coaching and his 5th year as the Head Coach at Northwood High School. A native of Indiana, Coach Brown started his coaching career as a Student Manager at Indiana University as well as an Assistant and Head Coach of Spiece Select AAU Team. After graduating from Indiana University, Coach Brown coached on the collegiate level at Pfeiffer University as an Assistant Coach for current College of Charleston Associate Head Coach Dave Davis, UNC-Charlotte as a graduate assistant for Hall of Fame Coach Bobby Lutz, and then lastly at Stanford University as a Coaching Intern for Duke legend Johnny Dawkins.

 

After Coach Brown's stint on the college level he entered the High School level as an assistant coach for Leo High School in Indiana. Their he helped lead the Leo Lions to a #2 ranking in the State, a Conference Championship, a Conference Tournament Championship, and a Sectional Final appearance. Following Leo, coach got his first head coaching opportunity at 5A Dutch Fork HS in Irmo, SC. In his 6 years at Dutch Fork, coach helped turn the program around to a top 10 5A team. Making the state playoffs 4 out of his 6 years, including a sweet 16 appearance and Elite 8 appearance. At Dutch Fork Coach sent 8 players onto the next level including 2 Division 1 players.

 

In 2017, Coach Brown was named as the Head Coach at Northwood High School. In his first 4 years, Coach Brown has compiled a 69-32 record. Coach has helped lead the Chargers to 3 state Playoff appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in his 2nd season, a Final Four and conference championship (first in 10 years) in his 3rd season, and a 3A State Runner-up in his 4th year. In the past 2 season his teams have lost a total of 6 games. In the 2020 season coach was selected as the Conference Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year.

Coach is married to the former Nicole Cummings of Sanford NC for 10 years and has a 4 year old daughter, Sadie Hope Brown.

Assistant Boys Basketball Coach

Biography:

Coach Kohls is from Columbus Grove, OH. He graduated from The University of Findlay in 2015 where he was a  4 year varsity basketball player and majored in mathematics education. During his time at UF, his team made 3 NCAA Division II tournament appearances and won the GLIAC conference tournament 3 times. After graduation, Coach Kohls played semi-professional basketball for The Lima Express. Prior to Northwood he taught 4 years and coached for 3 years in Ohio. This will be his 4th year at Northwood teaching math and coaching boy's basketball
